Food Review: BopNgrill

For over a decade, Chicago has had the privilege of being home to a truly unique and outstanding fast-food barbeque and burger joint called BopNgrill. BopNgrill is a Korean style barbeque that offers a fresh twist on a classic American staple.

Having received the stamp of approval from food critic legend, Guy Fieri, it can be assured this place knows how to whip up a tasty meal. However, BopNgrill is not your average barbeque. Their barbeque is most often served in a bowl, over rice and salad topped with an unbelievable poppyseed dressing.

The resturaunt has a small, but outstanding menu that offers six different bowls, including a BBQ beef bowl, fire chicken, Chicken katsu and a vegetarian option in their tofu bowls. When it comes to specialty bowls, bopNgrill is never short of options and many regulars will add a fried egg on the side to go with their BBQ bowl – Do not knock it until you try it.

In terms of burgers, BopNgrill will not disappoint. When Guy Fieri went to bopNgrill for his show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” he tried the famous duxelle burger served with applewood smoked bacon, an Unami-packed truffled mushroom, togarashi mayo, and smoked gouda. Fieri, who has tried thousands of burgers in his time with the show, put the burger in his top five all time favorites.

BopNgrill has been one of my favorite places for a quick bite since my freshman year of college, so I decided to take my friend Peter Didoemnico to try it. Didemenico, 21, had never tried bopNgrill before so I set him up with my favorite order – the KBBQ chicken bowl.

“It’s interesting, not really what I expected… the barbeque mixed with the dressing is actually really good.. wasn’t expecting that,” Didomenico said.

Peter didn’t seem quite as enthusiastic about the food as I was. Nevertheless,  I will continue to advocate for BopNgrill as one of the best “fast food” stops in Chicago.
